ALGARVE was a part of the Roman province of Lusitania and later became part of the Visigoths ruling. Still to this day we can see traces of the Roman presence in this region.
In the beginning of the XIII century, Tarik ibn Zyad, a Moorish king, passed the Strait of Gibraltar and defeated the Visigoths.
After many wars, the ruling over Algarve was established by the Christians. From 1249 to the proclamation of the Republic (in 1910), the Portuguese kings were called “King of Portugal and the Algarve”
During the Age of Discovery, Algarve was one of the major centres of maritime exploration. The people were decisive in this maritime adventure and in the occupation of the African lands.
The wine arrived in Algarve around the IV century BC and vineyards have always been harvested until these days. Its importance has been growing in
recent years.
