Dão

In the lands of Viriato, the most remarkable Lusitan that heroically resist the Romans in the II century b.C., was created in 1908 the Região Demarcada do Dão (Dão wine region) – it was the first region of non-liqueur wines implemented in Portugal.

Dão wine region is located in the northern area of Portugal’s central region in the Planalto Beirão (plateau Beirão). The plateau is sheltered by mountain ranges. To the north by the Nave, Montemuro and Lapa mountains, Buçaco to the southwest, Acor and Lousã to the south, Estrela, the highest mountain range in Portugal, to east and to the west Caramulo mountain.

Dão wine region has about 435 thousand acres and vineyards only occupy 10 % of that area.

This region is very similar to the French region of Burgundy. This wine region is becoming very popular and has been evolving in terms of reputation. Major wine producers from other regions sought to show DOC Dão wines in their portfolio.
